Beza Tesfaye Zewdie

Beza T. Zewdie, former Managing Director of the Ethiopian Space Science Society (ESSS), has led the organization’s operations, programs, and projects for the past five years. In this capacity, she played an instrumental role in the development of her country’s space policy, taking part in policy formulation and implementation. Before her appointment as Managing Director, Beza served ESSS in several other capacities, including Deputy Manager, Public Relations and Communication Expert, and Outreach Coordinator.

Prior to her time at ESSS, Beza worked at the Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC), in support of the United Nations Programme on Space Applications. During her four-year tenure, she served as a Regional Coordinator and represented African university students and young professionals to various international bodies, including the United Nations, African Union, Space Agencies, and academia.

Beza is a recipient of the Space Generation Advisory Council SGAC Young Space Leaders Award in 2013, the International Astronautical Federation Emerging Space Leader Award in 2015, African Union Young Space Leaders Award in 2018, SGAC African Space Leader Award in 2021, and also awarded a certificate from the Ethiopian Space Science and Technology Institute in 2021in recognition of her dedication and multi-faceted contributions to the space sector in Ethiopia and the wider African region.

Over the last decade, Beza has gained extensive experience in the African space sector by working closely with university students, young professionals in space, government officials, academia, and space industry leaders in the region. Mrs. Beza has been instrumental in propelling the Ethiopian national space agenda, dedicating herself to its development while actively engaging both governmental entities and the public. Her aspiration to position Ethiopia as a front-runner among space-exploring nations is in perfect alignment with the Pan-African vision for space exploration and technology, reflecting her dedication and strategic foresight.
